This was an opportunity I had wanted for several years now. A chance to use a mix of constant and strobe lighting to create a sports portrait that showed the ghost of the player in action. I shot a few experiments back in 2013 showing what could be done. These portraits were shot over a 2 week period in the studio. The portraits are posted below along with the website version and pages from the print edition. I decided to match up the team color with the light trail left behind each player.
The portraits in the gym were shot with 3 lights. One softbox on Daniel (who was named the player of the year), one gridded strobe on the backboard and another aimed right at the wall where it said Middies. After exposing the shot to look like the gym was dark, when in fact all the lights were on, it took about 5 minutes to adjust the lights to get just the right look.
Check back next week for the girls all stars and a video explaining how I shot these mixed light portraits.
