Back in 2011 I shot a few experimental portraits with Steve Borland that were in the style of a phenomenal portrait photographer out of NYC named Miller Mobley. I have been waiting for an opportunity since then to use that style in Ulster or Orange Magazines.
Last week the editor came to me and asked if I could some of with “something different” for a studio portrait. I had the perfect solution: The Miller Mobley style portrait.
The setup was on gray seamless. A large softbox up and in front of the subjects at a very low power. Then a gridded light back behind the subject camera right to create the highlights. A gridded light on the seamless for the light spot. Then a snooted sb800 to create the highlight on the face along with another gridded light on the face to fill some of the shadow.
I got the setup done by shooting a few self portraits. Then brought in a few test subjects. The shoot with the actual person went very smooth as a result. Check back in May for the published image.
