A few weeks back I had a photo session with the editor of 845Scene.com (Timothy Malcolm). The idea was to create an edgy hip young feel. Tim hosts a weekly entertainment web show on 845Scene.com. At the end of every show Tim looks into the camera, points and says “Have a good time, now!” This was one of the ideas that the ad was to convey.
Going into the shoot I quickly had the idea for a dark, edgy, hard light photo. I wanted to convey that this show was aimed at a young audience and was hip.
Both of the shots were setup the same (see the diagram below). A large softbox high camera left, 2 strobes bare back behind Tim and off the side to create that harsh edge light and one directly behind Tim at full power to create a bit of edge light seperation from the black background.
For the second shot I knew going into that it was going to be an extreme horizontal. So I had the idea to have Tim point at the camera. I used a wide angle lens so Tim’s hand could fill half the frame while his head was further back in the frame. Wanted to give a feel that he was pointing out of the image.
For the final ad the image was placed on a photo from a local concert (Shot by Mike Rice).
In the end I think I was able to create the look and feel I had aimed for from the start.
