Here is a different take on baby portraits. Do you want to have a photo of your toddler (or any age kid) that you will love and they will too as they get older? Then get a “cool” portrait done. These are some recent portraits of Jacob, a 2-year-old and Ryan who will be 2 later this year. The idea here is to take a memorable photo that is both unique and captures their personality.
Jacob on the Motorcycle: This shot was actually shot at a birthday party and was completely unplanned. There are things I would have done different if I had all my equipment with me, but in the end this shot worked out really well. This was shot with one light on a voice-activated lightstand (Thank you Emma). I used a 50mm lens on my D700 at f4.5 1/200th ISO 500. I used a neutral density filter to make the sky more dramatic …. no photoshopping here! This is what it looked like on the back of the camera.
For the shots of Ryan: I used a similar setup. Same lens, camera and filter. For some of those shots I used a second light and an orange gel on the light and balanced for tungsten. That gave the sky that blue color. I added in some other shots from Ryan’s shoot as well…they don’t all have to be “cool”. I used the sun as a rim light for most of these shots as well.
