I recently shot a set of portraits of Orange Magazine of Brian Palmer. He is an avid Metal Detecting Hobbyist. Brian and his fiance Erin Clarke travel around the Hudson Valley in search of old properties to search. They have located some amazing finds from coins to shoe buckles and old buttons even in places right in Middletown hidden just below the surface. Brian was an extremely interesting subject to photograph. So I wanted him to look larger than life. I setup 2 strobes bare bulb opposite the sun to the left of the camera. I underexposed the portrait of Brian standing with the detector then used the 2 strobes to simulate the sunlight. Getting down on the ground shooting from the level of the metal detector with a wide angle lens created that larger then life look I was going for.
