This assignment for Orange Magazine was a rather interesting one. I had shot inside American Needleworks back in December which led to this story about yarn in Orange County. James Prather, owner of American Needleworks in Middletown and Gail Parrinello, owner of the Cornwall Yarn Shop both agreed to be photographed for the story. Both shops are fascinating inside but very different. These are some of the images from inside the Cornwall yarn show below and here are the shots inside the Middletown shop.
The portraits of Gail and James are some of the best I have shot in the past few years. For Gail I placed her surrounded by racks of her yarn. I used one light on the yarn behind her and one softbox up high on her. The backlight provided a spotlight of color behind her. Since I had shot the Middletown shop in December, I knew exactly the spot I wanted to shoot the portrait of James. In the back of his studio he has a work table with light hanging over it. This was the perfect spot that made him look like he was toiling away late at night. Check back for another post on how I shot the portrait of James inside American Needleworks.
