A couple of weeks ago I was tasked with taking a photograph that illustrated bad breath for the health section of the Times Herald-Record.
I came up with two concepts.
1. A gas mask
2. A portrait with smoke that would look like bad breath vapor coming from the subject’s mouth
I was able to pull off both concepts and I think #2 worked out better, but this one was never used in print. The gas mask was shot with 4 strobed all at 1/2 power zoomed to 85 mm in an X pattern surrounding the subject (thank you Steve Borland for playing along).
The gas mask shot was taken with a D200, ISO 100, F13, 185 mm on my Nikon 80-200 2.8. I used some high pass filter in post to give that extra gritty feel.
Check back next week for a behind the scene on how I created the vapor shot. (it is a composite of 3 photos).
